Six

Vince slept, but there was no way Sally could sleep. Watching him was much more enjoyable.

Ho looked so cute curled up next to her, it was all she could do to keep her hands to herself. Wisps of hair feathered his forehead, all but begging her to comb them back, and his lower lip pouted as if anticipating her kiss. Unable to resist, she brushed the tip of her finger over the lip's fullness and had to duck when he batted a hand as if swatting at a pesky fly.

Holding her breath, she waited until he'd settled again, then laid her head on the pillow beside his and resigned herself to simply watch. She still found it hard to believe that they'd made love. What amazed her more was discovering what a tender and unselfish lover he'd proven to be. It was such a contradiction to his normal demeanor and made her wonder if there was a gentler, kinder side trapped inside that only needed nurturing to reveal itself.

"Can't sleep?"

Wincing, she laid a hand on his chest. "Sorry. I didn't mean to wake you."

He caught her hand and pulled it to his lips. "You didn't." He guided her hand around his neck, then tugged her close to cuddle. "Why can't you sleep?"

She snuggled against his chest. "I don't know. Just not tired, I guess."

He stroked a hand down her hair. "Regrets?"

She tipped her face up to look at him, then tucked it against his chest again, hiding a smile. "None. You?"

"Only one."

She tensed, then asked uneasily. "What?"

"It was over too damn fast."

She looked up again, to see if he was teasing and saw the glint of humor in his eyes. Laughing, she pushed him to his back and crawled on top of him. pinning his arms to the bed. "Then I guess I'll have to make sure this one lasts a long, long time"

Sally floated lazily, buoyed by the inflated raft beneath her. Vince drifted beside her on a matching raft, his eyes hidden by dark sunglasses. Overhead the sun ducked in and out of puffy white clouds, offering an occasional respite from its blinding heat.

Sally scooped up a handful of water and dribbled it over her middle. "We’re nothing but a couple of slugs."

"Speak for yourself. My mind is always working"

She glanced over. "Well, shut it off. You're supposed to be relaxing."

He pushed out his arms and stretched, then dropped them with a sigh to lace his hands over his stomach again. "Can't."

"Sure you can. Think black and it'll go blank."

He looked over the top of his sunglasses at her. "You're kidding, right?"

She sat up, letting her legs dangle over the side of the raft. "Works for me. Picture yourself with a paintbrush painting your mind black." She pushed out a hand. "Go ahead. Try it. You'll see"

His expression doubtful, he dropped his sunglasses back into place and wrinkled his forehead in concentration.

"Black." she reminded him. "Big, bold strokes of black."

She waited a minute. "Well? Is it working?"

"I don't know.
